Seeing Horned Guan in Guatemala with Cayaya Birding

Horned Guan (Oreophasis derbianus) is restricted to the highlands of Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico. The species lives in cloud forests at an altitude of 2000-3000 m. Populations of the different mountain ranges and volcanoes are isolated from each other. The species is globally Endangered because of severely fragmented habitat and hunting pressure.

Visiting birders put a value to the cloud forest and support with their fees private and communal land owners to protect the guan's habitat. Cayaya Birding organizes excursions to the habitat of Horned Guan. About 9 out of 10 visits are successful.
